INVERTED PYRAMID STORY
CENTERVILLE, Iowa — A car crash killed two people and injured three on Tuesday night.
Peter Smith, 17, the son of Centerville Mayor John Smith, and Gladys Parker, 73, died in the car crash, Police Sgt. Wilbur Jansen said.
Three teens from Centerville High School were rushed to Centerville Hospital with injuries, Jansen said.
Police said they found beer cans in the teen's car.
“We do not know yet if the teens’ had been drinking or if alcohol was a factor in the crash,” Jansen said.
Parker was killed instantly when the carload of teens broadsided her car in the middle of the intersection, Jansen said.
The car with teens ran a stop the light at the intersection of Broad and Elm streets around 10:35, he said.
All three teens are in stable condition, hospital spokesperson Helen Trent said.
Police will investigate to determine if alcohol was a contributor to the crash, Jansen said.

Greek Week at Elon University has been canceled due to COVID-19 and has Zeta Tau Alpha emotional.
Zeta Tau Alpha, a sorority on campus, was especially excited about the dance portion of Greek Week.
Greek Week was supposed to be held from April 3-9. This event allows the national Pan-Hellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, and Panhellenic Council to unite as one and show their love for the community through service.
Each day, a specific event is in place to provide an opportunity for service or philanthropy.
Zeta Tau Alpha was very determined to win the Greek Week dance so it could win the prize money that would go to its philanthropy, Breast Cancer Education and Awareness.
Julia Reed a junior in Zeta Tau Alpha and in charge of the Greek Week dance, had an inclination that the event was going to be canceled.
She continued to work hard until the announcement was official.
“I was completely devastated. We have all committed so much time and effort to the dance, so I am definitely sad to see it go to waste.”
Reed is grateful that she has a second chance to be part of Greek Week but said, “My heart breaks for the seniors who do not have a second chance,” she said. “I would have loved for us all to perform on stage, but sometimes you just have to accept that not everything is in your control.”
Zeta Tau Alpha is a sorority on the campus of Elon University. The goal of this organization is to “make a difference in the lives of our members by developing the potential of each individual.” The organization was founded on Oct. 15, 1898, by nine friends at Virginia State Female Normal School.
